Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, 8th Laird of Auchinleck (1706 – 1782) was a Scottish judge who served in the supreme courts of Scotland. He was the father of the author and biographer James Boswell, and grandfather of songwriter Sir Alexander Boswell .

The manuscript is named after Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, who was a lawyer and supreme court judge in Edinburgh, Scotland. Lord Auchinleck lived from 1706 to 1782, and was the father of James Boswell who wrote The Life of Samuel Johnson .
The Auchinleck Manuscript was presented to the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, in 1744 by Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck (b.1706, d.1782). It is not known exactly how the manuscript came into his possession.
The "new" Auchinleck House was built circa 1760 by Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, 8th Laird of Auchinleck. It later passed on to his son, James Boswell, the biographer of Samuel Johnson. Boswell and Johnson visited the house in 1773 on their way back from their journey to the Hebrides. [1] .
