Two on a Tower: A Romance (1882) is a novel by English author Thomas Hardy, classified by him as a romance and fantasy. It is regarded as one of his minor works. It is one of Hardy's Wessex novels, set in late Victorian Dorset .
The purpose behind Two on a Tower is set out unambiguously in his 1895 Preface to the work: This slightly-built romance was the outcome of a wish to set the emotional history of two infinitesimal lives against the stupendous background of the stellar universe, and to impart to readers the sentiment that of these contrasting magnitudes the smaller might be the greater to them as men.

Two on a Tower was written hastily at Wimbourne for serial publication in the U.S. in The Atlantic Monthly where it appeared from May to December 1882. The first edition in book form was published by Sampson Low in October 1882. Although reviews were generally poor, Hardy noted that critics privately assured him of the novel's merit.
