An urban legend has often surfaced that Question Mark told the band that he had written a poem and invited the group to help set his words to music and they did so.

Founding member Balderrama recalls the origin of their journey. “I started the band and Robert (Martinez), Question Mark’s brother, was my drummer,” explains the guitarist. “At the time my nephew Larry (Borjas) was the bass player, too.
The original lineup was formed in 1962, comprising Larry Borjas (bass), Borjas' cousin Robert Balderrama (guitar) and Robert Martinez (drums). They soon added Frank Rodriguez (organ) and Rudy Rodriguez on vocals. These Mexican-American musicians were mostly born in Texas but grew up in Michigan.
Formed in Saginaw, Michigan in 1964, Question Mark joined up with friends Bobby Balderrama (guitar), Robert Martinez (drums) and Larry Borjas (bass), taking as a band name the title of a 1957 Japanese sci-fi movie, The Mysterians.
