The Silver Cord is a 1933 American pre-Code film produced and released by RKO Radio Pictures, directed by John Cromwell, and based on a 1926 Broadway play, The Silver Cord by Sidney Howard, that starred Laura Hope Crews as an overly possessive mother.

Sidney Howard’s once-controversial play about the smothering aspects of Mother Love, The Silver Cord was filmed in 1933 with Laura Hope Crews recreating her stage role. Ms. Crews plays the outwardly selfless mother of Joel McCrea and Eric Linden; Irene Dunne and Frances Dee play the younger women in the lives of the two sons.
A domineering matriarch is less than happy when her son brings home his new bride. She immediately sets to work at sabotaging their marriage as well as the engagement of her younger and weaker son.

Crews, playing a monstrous, overbearing mother to a couple of hopelessly attached Big Boys (Joel McCrea, Eric Linden), is as frightening as any Universal movie monster. The biggest boy, she tucks in and kisses on the mouth (McCrea). The smallest, she presses his face to her bosom (Linden).
