Adrian Durham Stokes (27 October 1902 – 15 December 1972) was a British art critic with a speciality in early Renaissance sculpture and the aesthetics of stone-carving. He helped to turn the traditional Cornish fishing-port of St. Ives into an internationally acclaimed centre of modern art.

Adrian Stokes had been born in 1902 into an upper middle-class family. From them he derived the financial independence that made his life as a writer and artist possible. The central facts of his life up till this short painting holiday in Cornwall are these.
Excelled at most sports, becoming a national schoolboy champion at tennis. Held Socialist views and contributed to the Rugbeian magazine. In 1917, his eldest brother Philip, who had been head boy, was killed in action on the French battlefield. Felt the need to compensate for the loss by intellectual exertion.
British writer and painter. An intensely subjective writer with an interest in psychoanalysis, Stokes responded passionately, even ecstatically, to art, believing its task was to show the ‘utmost drama of the soul as laid-out things’.
