Maria Branwell era a oitava dos doze filhos de Thomas Branwell e Anne Carne em Penzance, na Cornualha, Inglaterra, apesar de apenas duas das cinco filhas e um dos filhos terem chegado à idade adulta. Thomas Branwell era um mercador de sucesso e detinha várias propriedades na cidade.

Patrick's wife Maria Brontë, née Branwell (15 April 1783 – 15 September 1821), was born in Penzance, Cornwall, and came from a comfortably well-off, middle-class family. Her father had a flourishing tea and grocery store and had accumulated considerable wealth. Maria died at the age of 38 of uterine cancer.
During his visit Patrick Brontë was introduced to the newly arrived Maria Branwell, and after a short but determined courtship (Patrick Brontë walking the 24-mile round trip to take Maria out walking!), the couple were married in nearby Guiseley Parish Church on December 29, 1812.
