Bertha was the elder daughter of Conan III of Brittany by Maude, the illegitimate daughter of King Henry I of England.

Marriage & issue. Bertha and Alain had two children: Conan II, Duke of Brittany; Hawise, Duchess of Brittany

  6. Later, when Alan died in 1146, Bertha returned home to Brittany from England. On his death-bed in 1148, Conan III disinherited his son Hoel, Count of Nantes from succession to the duchy. With this surprise move, Bertha became his heiress and successor as hereditary Duchess of Brittany. However, Hoel was to retain the county of Nantes.
