The school served as the basis for a fictionalized choir in the 2014 film Boychoir. From 2012 to 2015, the school's location changed multiple times due to declining admissions and limited funding options. In 2015, the school filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and ultimately closed on August 15, 2017.
The Chorister School is on the Cathedral site, in the College, and forms a part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bow School and Durham School are on Quarryheads Lane, a short walk from the Cathedral.

The Chorister School, Durham and Durham School will merge from September 2021 to form one Foundation. The new Foundation will continue to support choristers for Durham Cathedral and offer enhanced academic, pastoral and co-curricular opportunities for all pupils.
Chorister School is a Church of England school with boarding and day options for pupils aged 3 to 11. It is linked to Durham School and offers a Christian framework, excellent facilities and a happy learning environment.

The school takes pupils aged 3–18 years and became fully co-educational in 1998. A member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, it enrolls 495 day and boarding students. Its preparatory institution, known as the Chorister School, enrolls a further 250 pupils.
