Recorded by the sea in Aldeburgh, Herbert’s sort-of concept album is changeable as the ocean. There’s a cabaret approach to storytelling, in rollicking sea shanties and waltzes, while her clear pale voice switches between clipped precision, fluttering whispers and full-throated chanteuse.

As its title suggests, The Sea Cabinet brings together a dozen songs which are linked to the sea in various ways. Most of them are new, with only the fragile beauty of “Lorelei” recurring from the 2009 album.
Herbert’s blossoming career after she escaped her unwanted mid-noughties image as a jazz diva has embraced idiosyncratically incisive songwriting and scores for soundtracks and theatre. The Sea Cabinet, however, finds her in assured charge of an even broader palette.
