Chantelle was a popular all-female merengue musical group formed in 1988 in Puerto Rico, composed of members Olga Tañón, Sandra Torres and Daly Fontanez. Chantelle's biggest hit was a cover of Juan Gabriel's "Queriendo y No" ("Wanting and Not Wanting") in 1989.

In 1957 the Chantels, then in high school, had been singing as a group for several years. Unlike some Black groups whose influences were based in gospel, the quintet was influenced by classical music and Latin hymns. Formed in 1988, Chantelle was an all-female music group, which is somewhat of a rarity for tropical music bands. One of their few predecessors in that respect was "Las Chicas Del Can", a Merengue group from Dominican Republic, that performed during the middle 1980s.
6 de mar. de 2017 · The Chantels were a vocal group, but their impact was as real as that of any "girl band," as their highly emotional brand of doo-wop (okay, pop vocal) struck a very lucrative chord with females, leading to an entire genre of early '60s pop known bluntly as the "girl group." They never got to reap the rewards like they should have, however.
