Payne-Townshend in 1932. Charlotte Frances Payne-Townshend (20 January 1857 – 12 September 1943) was an Irish political activist in Britain. She was a member of the Fabian Society and was dedicated to the struggle for women's rights. She married the playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Through them she joined the Fabian Society and in 1896 she was invited to spend a holiday with the Webbs, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw in Suffolk.
