This work, produced by Daniel Lanois and Mark Howard, is a balladry-like extension of her then neo-cabaret persona, interpreting songs by herself and legendary songwriters of her generation, like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Leonard Cohen and the songwriting duo Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
Originally recorded at Teatro Studios in California and produced by Mark Howard and Daniel Lanois, A deluxe edition issued by BMG includes a selection of previously unreleased bonus demos and an unheard studio recording, plus new liner notes.
Vagabond Ways was originally released in 1999 by Marianne Faithfull. For this album, she tapped Daniel Lanois and Mark Howard to produce her return to rock, or rather alternative rock. It was a very smart move, as his production style at the time fit her and her songs.

After a pair of kurt weill inspired cabaret albums marianne enlists top producer daniel lanois as producer for "vagabond ways" and continued that good run. Their collaboration went quite well, the opening 3 songs being stunningly disturbing songs concerning the damages of excess.
