Edward Shippen (February 16, 1729 – April 15, 1806) [1] was an American lawyer, judge, government official, and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His fourth daughter, Margaret Shippen, was the second wife of Benedict Arnold .

Edward was no different. He learned law from Tench Francis, then Pennsylvania’s attorney general and his future father-in-law; young Shippen married Margaret Francis in 1753, and together they had nine children. After completing his legal studies at the Middle Temple in London, Shippen was appointed judge of the admiralty in 1755.
Edward Shippen IV (1729-1806), who studied law in London, served on Philadelphia’s common council and acted as clerk for the colony’s supreme court. (His daughter, Margaret, would marry Benedict Arnold in 1779.) Joseph Shippen (1732-1810) served as colonel during the French and Indian War and then as colonial secretary.
