Malcolm McKinnon (brother) Sir Donald Charles McKinnon ONZ GCVO PC (born 27 February 1939) is a New Zealand politician who served as the 12th deputy prime minister of New Zealand and the minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand. He was the secretary-general of the Commonwealth of Nations from 2000 until 2008.

Don is one of New Zealand’s leading employment lawyers and has practised in this area for approximately 30 years. He was a partner at Simpson Grierson for 10 years (the last 3 years as Head of Litigation) and then co-founded boutique employment law firm SBM Legal, where he served as Managing Partner for 12 years.
Don MacKinnon began his career at Ontario Hydro in 1971 and is a lineman by trade. His union activism began more than 30 years ago and has included 11 years as the Power Workers’ Union’s (PWU) Vice-President before becoming the President of PWU in 2000. He retired from this position in 2017.
