The resources available to students in American Studies are as broad as Harvard University itself. Our program is guided by a core committee of 15 to 20 faculty members and about 40 additional affiliated faculty members drawn from across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and several professional schools.

She attended Howard University Law School (1941-1944) and completed graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. During the 1940s she operated a law office in New York City and was later hired as an associate attorney for the law offices of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison (1956).

Many American Studies doctoral students work at Harvard’s archives and museums, and some graduates parlay this on-the-job training into careers in public history. Of the many archives and museums at Harvard, one of the most important to our program is Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library , which is widely considered the world’s best archival source on American women.
Graduate Program. The goal of the doctoral program is to train students to become both skilled scholars and conscientious teachers. Throughout the program students work with advisors and other faculty members as they engage in coursework, prepare for and take the general exam, work as teaching fellows, and research and write the dissertation.
