    Norman Williams was previously professor of surgery at Barts and The London and president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Between 2015-18, he was an independent clinical advisor to the Secretary of State for Health, led an independent commission on education and training for patient safety for Health Education England and chaired the Rapid Review of Gross Negligence Manslaughter in Healthcare for the Department of Health and Social Care.

    As a past director for the National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation, he retains a close interest in the subject and is currently president of Bowel Research UK, a registered charity that supports patients by funding innovative research.

    The Chair has overall responsibility for the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to provide expert advice on NHS reconfigurations or significant service change to ministers.
