He was the son of Roger, Count of Maine, and Rothilde, daughter of Charles the Bald. He succeeded his father c. 900. By a marriage of his sister Judith to Hugh the Great sometime before 917, Hugh became an ally to the Robertians ending a long period of hostility between them.

Dukes of Maine (ducs du Maine. In 1673, the title began to be used again. It was revived by Louis XIV for his first illegitimate son by his chief mistress, Françoise-Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. He used it until his death and also founded the semi-royal house of Bourbon du Maine, named after his title.
The obvious suggestion that the Hugues of this 900 document was a count of Maine is confirmed by an act of 31 March 914, in which he appears as "Cinomanorum comitis" in a charter of duke Robert, abbot of Saint-Martin de Tours (later king Robert I) ["S. domni Hugonis Cinomanorum comitis qui aderat.

When Hugues Ier du Maine was born about 0892, in Lusignan, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France, his father, Roger du Maine, was 28 and his mother, Rothilde de France, was 22. He had at least 2 sons with Bichilde de Bourges. He died on 26 March 0931, in Poitou-Charentes, France, at the age of 40.
