Mary Jane Godwin (née de Vial; pseudonymed Mary Jane Clairmont; 1768 – 17 June 1841) was an English author, publisher, and bookseller. She was the second wife of William Godwin and stepmother to Mary Shelley.
After convincing Mary Jane Godwin, who had pursued them to Calais, that they did not wish to return, the trio travelled to Paris, and then, by donkey, mule, carriage, and foot, through a France recently ravaged by war, to Switzerland.
William Godwin. Having married Mary Jane Clairmont in 1801, Godwin acquired two stepchildren to add to Wollstonecraft's two daughters. Mary Jane was a skilled translator who had worked for Benjamin Tabart in the children's-book trade.
