Izanagi and Izanami created first eight islands: Iyo, Tsu, Iki, Sado, Yamato, Tsukushi, Oki, and Awaji, which they named collectively as Oyashima-Kuni – the Land of the Great Eight Islands. The Iyo Island was later renamed Shikoku – meaning four lands, in testament to its original conception.
