She supported and collaborated with her husband on engineering projects, before the experience of managing thousands of female engineers in the First World War inspired her activism and support for greater recognition of women in this field.

Katharine was a member of the redoubtable Bethell family from the East Riding of Yorkshire, the youngest of the twelve children of William Froggatt Bethell and Maria Elizabeth (née Beckett).
