The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel written by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers .

The work, which is set during the time of the Bourbon Restoration in France, tells the story of an unjustly incarcerated man who escapes to find revenge.
There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the isle of monte cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearththe treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration.
