Stephen O'Brien is a British politician and diplomat who was the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. He was also a Member of Parliament for Eddisbury and a Minister for International Development and Trade.

Dr. Stephen J. O’Brien trained in molecular and population genetics at Cornell University. He joined the National Cancer Institute as a post-doc in 1971 and is now chief of the NCI’s Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, which he founded in the late 1980s.
