  6. Charles Evans Hughes was the 11th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, succeeding William Howard Taft. Hughes previously served as an Associate Justice from 1910-1916. After 14 years away from the Court, he was nominated as Chief Justice on February 3, 1930 by President Herbert Hoover.
