The University of Franeker, or Franeker University (Universiteit van Franeker) was for several centuries a leading European institution of higher learning seated in the ancient city of Franeker (province of Friesland in the Netherlands).
The University of Franeker (1585–1811) was a university in Franeker, Friesland, the Netherlands. It was the second oldest university of the Netherlands, founded shortly after Leiden University.
The University of Franeker was founded as one of the means in a civilization offensive aimed at the rapid Protestantization of Friesland and the discipline and rationalization of the lives of the people. Humanism and Calvinism were able to work together well in this endeavor.

19th Century legacy. The amazing work of the university, which spanned more than three centuries, continued through its alumni and successors. Sadly, the university was disbanded by Napoleon in 1811, along with the Universities of Harderwijk and Utrecht.
