Roald Sagdeev. 1992. Tate Medal. In recognition of his pivotal contributions to the development of the space physics program in the former Soviet Union and his leadership in supporting and advancing broad internationl cooperation in the study of physical phenomena in space.
Sagdeev was one of the creators of the quasilinear theory of plasmas and contributed to the understanding of collisionless shock waves in fusion plasmas and plasmas in space. In chaos theory he is known for his work on chaos of magnetic surfaces.
