As they were cousins, a Papal dispensation was required for their marriage. Helvis was from the House of Welf. Her father was Philip of Brunswick-Grubenhagen and her mother was Helvis de Dampierre.
James married his kinswoman Helvis (Heloise) of Brunswick-Grubenhagen (1353 – January 15/25, 1421) (daughter of Philip of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Constable of Jerusalem and Helisia of Dampierre) in 1365.
