A diferença é que ao dizer “ if you will ”, eu procuro receber o aval da outra pessoa; já com “ so to speak ” eu apenas digo e pronto.

À primeira vista, alguém que não conhece a expressão no contexto em que ela é usada, pode ficar sem entender a frase, porque, a partir da gramática, você começa: “if you will = se você”, e aí você fica esperando o resto da frase que não vem.
