Ashik Kerib ( Georgian: აშიკ-ქერიბი, literally "strange ashik "), sometimes known internationally as The Lovelorn Minstrel, is a 1988 Soviet art film directed by Dodo Abashidze from Georgia and Sergei Parajanov from Armenia that is based on the short story of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov.

Synopsis. Kerib, a poor but good-hearted ashik (minstrel) living in the city of Tiflis, is in love with Magul-Megeri, the beautiful daughter of a local rich man. The feeling is mutual, but Magul-Megeri's father would prefer her to marry Kurshudbek, a rather rude but wealthier man who has long has his eye on her.
Synopsis. Wandering minstrel Ashik Kerib falls in love with a rich merchant’s daughter, but is spurned by her father and forced to roam the world for a thousand and one nights. Now presumed dead by those he loves, he performs for the poor and unfortunate on his journeys through the wilderness.
The Turkish minstrel Ashik Kerib, tossed out by his beloved’s father and given a thousand days to make his fortune, sets off across Armenia fending off fools, philistines, and fascists with the magic of his art.
