The Gender Development Index (GDI) measures gender inequalities in the achievement of key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, a good education, and a decent standard of living. The groups below define the level of equality in these achievements as the absolute deviation of GDI from gender parity.
The Gender Development Index (GDI) is an index designed to measure gender equality. GDI, together with the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM), was introduced in 1995 in the Human Development Report written by the United Nations Development Program .
The two indices measure disparities and inequality between men and women in human development by analysing three basic dimensions: health, knowledge and living standards, as well as four key aspects of human development: reproductive health, empowerment, education, and labour market participation.
