Sorry for possible silly question, in ww1 trench warfare, at least as depicted in documentaries, they used artillery barrages and forward charges of infantry to gain ground. Why didn’t they just dig forward? Keep digging forward, then dig a lengthways trench to solidify positions, and keep going?
