He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate.

The event draws 20,000 visitors to Austin, which at the time had a population of just 14,000. Sam Houston's youngest son, Temple Lea Houston lead the dedication.
