After his death in 1329 the body of Robert the Bruce was interred at Dunfermline Abbey, where it lay until the Abbey's Great Tower collapsed in 1818 and his tomb was lost in time. In 1818, workmen making repairs to the Abbey discovered a skeleton that had been wrapped in gold cloth within a stone tomb. The skeleton was examined by Robert Liston, an Edinburgh surgeon who noted his breastbone had been sawn away so that the heart could be removed. Liston identified the skeleton as that of Bruce bec
