Wikipedia claims that the donations are needed to keep the site online. Guilt-tripped journalists including Heather Brooke and Toby Young have contributed to Wikipedia in the belief that donations help fund operating costs.

Wikipedia is one of the top 10 websites in the world, and it runs on a fraction of what other top websites spend. People and Projects : The other top websites have thousands of employees. Wikimedia Foundation has about 700 staff and contractors to support a wide variety of projects, making your donation a great investment in a highly-efficient not-for-profit organization.
They believe that the only way for Wikipedia to remain able to keep their current neutral status is to get donations from the public rather than payments from companies. It costs a lot of money to keep Wikipedia going, to pay for the computers running 24/7 and the staff that maintains them. That money has to come from somewhere.
