Istanbul ( /istɑ̃bul/ a ; en turc : İstanbul b, /isˈtanbuɫ/ c Écouter ), appelé officiellement ainsi à partir de 1930 et auparavant Byzance et Constantinople, est la plus grande ville et métropole de Turquie et la préfecture de la province homonyme, dont elle représente environ 50 % de la superficie mais plus de 97 % de la population.
The city, considered capital of the larger Istanbul Province, is administered by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (MMI), which oversees the 39 districts of the city-province. The current city structure can be traced back to the Tanzimat period of reform in the 19th century, before which Islamic judges and imams led the city under the auspices of the Grand Vizier .

Two years later, Ardahan, Beyoğlu, Çatalca, Dersim, Ergani, Gelibolu, Genç, Kozan, Oltu, Muş, Siverek and Üsküdar provinces were transformed into districts. In 1927, Doğubayazıt was transformed into a district and was made a part of Ağrı. In 1929, Muş became a province again and Bitlis became a district.
