Een van de marxisten die in deze eeuw de utopische dimensie in het marxisme sterk heeft benadrukt, is Ernst Bloch (1885 – 1977). Zijn werk vormt een schitterende poging om een zelfbewust utopisch marxisme te ontwikkelen. In een groot aantal boeken hamerde Bloch op het centrale belang van het utopische voor iedere rationele politiek.

Bloch's first major work, The Principle of Hope, which was published in German, emphasized the role of hope as a human drive. He returned to Leipzig in 1948, where he remained until conflict with Communist Party officials compelled him to defect to West Germany (1961). There, he taught at the University of Tübingen.
