In 2017, NDPE policies covered 74 percent of refining capacity in Indonesia and Malaysia, where most refineries are located. As of April 2020, this amount has increased to 83 percent.

Public lands that include rural settlements, indigenous lands, natural conservation units, and federal and state lands accounted for 141,186 ha of the total Cerrado deforestation in 2020.

However, deforestation continues and unsustainable palm oil continues to be produced, traded and consumed. Ten companies caused 75 percent of all palm oil-related deforestation in Indonesia in 2017.

Its oil palm planted area stood at 2.7 million hectares (ha) at the end of 2020, which is more than 20 percent of its land area. Malaysia is the world’s second largest palm oil producer with 26 percent of global output, following only Indonesia (58 percent).
