4 de nov. de 2019 · York Minster is officially the ‘Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York’. Although it is by definition a cathedral, as it is the site of a bishop’s throne, the word ‘cathedral’ did not come into use until the Norman Conquest. The word ‘minster’ was what Anglo-Saxons named their important churches.
The carillon at York Minster is based on a chime of eleven bells cast by Taylor’s in 1933 for St. Mary’s Church, Nelson, Lancashire. These were transferred to the Cathedral on the closure of that church in 1989.
