But the author and artist were so dissatisfied with the printer’s published products that the first edition was recalled, and the book was reissued with improved (but still dissatisfactory) illustrations and an 1866 title page later that year.

An alumnus of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, he was knighted for artistic achievements in 1893, the first such honour ever bestowed on an illustrator or cartoonist.

Working during the Victorian era, Tenniel spent 50 years as a political cartoonist for Punch magazine. He produced around 2,000 cartoons for the publication, but it was his illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass that made him a household name.
