You will be a transit passenger only. So even though your flight to the US departs from SYD, you will not have legally visited Australia.

  5. The question did not ask if you stopped in another country before arriving in the USA. It is asking if you are using the USA as a transit point to ANOTHER country. "Is your travel to the USA occurring (while) you are transiting to another country". You are not. You are traveling to the USA so you answered correctly.
