They mean the exact same thing: infections that you can get from another person during sexual contact. These infections have had many different names over the years: venereal disease (VD), the clap, the drip, and more recently, STDs and STIs.

Most STIs pass from person to person by sexual contact through bodily fluids or from skin-to-skin contact by touching the infected part of a person’s body, usually the genitals.
