Vissarion Belinskii was born in Sveaborg, Finland (then part of Russia), where his father served as a medical officer in the Russian army. After retiring he ran a small practice and drank. Belinskii grew up in the city of Chembar in the province of Penza. His childhood was unhappy, his father beat him and he was chronically ill.
