Né à Plympton Saint Maurice dans le Devon, Joshua Reynolds fait son apprentissage chez Thomas Hudson de 1740 à 1743. Entre 1749 et 1752, il séjourne en Italie, principalement à Rome. Après son installation à Londres en 1753, il domine en Grande-Bretagne, avec son rival Thomas Gainsborough , l'art du portrait dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle.
