Dutch, 1618-1680. Follow. Sir Peter Lely was a painter of Dutch origin whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. Lely was born Pieter van der Faes to Dutch parents in Soest in Westphalia, where his father was an officer serving in the armed forces of the Elector of Brandenburg.
This sketch provides a good example of Lely’s working method as one of the most successful portraitists in England in the second half of the seventeenth century. Following the example of Anthony van Dyck, Lely painted only the sitter’s head in his or her presence, sometimes laying in an outline for the pose and costume.
Peter Lely works from his studio in Norwich, England. Trained in Fine Art studies at Guildford School of Art and Goldsmiths, London University, he has exhibited extensively, with works in private collections in the UK, Europe and the United States.
