22 de nov. de 1996 · Garrett Birkhoff made major contributions in the area of abstract algebra. His 1940 book, Lattice Theory , on abstract questions of structure and relative magnitude, opened new lines of inquiry and led to a now fertile area of algebraic research.
Garrett Birkhoff has been one of the main contributors to the subject. This is the second edition of his book, and it has been greatly expanded, and almost completely rewritten. It gives an account of the great development of the subject since 1940, much of it the work of the author and his school.

Garrett Birkhoff was George Putnam Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University and the author of a number of well-known books on mathematics and its applications.
