In January 1396, the widow Katherine Swynford married John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the eldest surviving son of Edward III of England and uncle to King Richard II. Until the King remarried later that year, the marriage made Katherine the first lady of the land.

After their wedding, which returned her to high social standing, Katherine travelled with John around his many properties, but she returned to Lincoln Cathedral Close when he died, after only four years of marriage.
