Alexandra Feodorovna nasceu no dia 13 de julho de 1798 no Palácio de Charlotemburgo, como princesa Frederica Luísa Carlota Guilhermina da Prússia. Foi a filha mais velha sobrevivente e quarta criança de Frederico Guilherme III , rei da Prússia, e de Luísa de Mecklemburgo-Strelitz , sendo irmã de Frederico Guilherme IV da Prússia e de Guilherme I da Alemanha .
