  4. Oscar Hammerstein II was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and musical theatre director from New York City. He won a total of 8 Tony Awards for his best known works, "South Pacific" (1949), "The King and I" (1951), and "The Sound of Music" (1959).

Sondheim credits his success with the lyrics to West Side Story to Hammerstein's influence and guidance. Oscar Hammerstein II died of stomach cancer on August 23, 1960, at his home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
