Richard Howe, 1er comte Howe ( anglais : Earl Howe ), connu sous le nom de Richard Howe puis lord Howe, né le 8 mars 1726 à Londres et mort le 5 août 1799, est un officier de marine de la Royal Navy britannique. Il se distingue en particulier pendant la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis et les guerres de la Révolution française.
Richard Howe did rejoin the navy to fight against France and Spain. [2] In 1782, he was named the first Earl Howe. He fought in Gibraltar in 1782. He was made the first Lord of the Admiralty in 1783 and held the post until 1788. He was Vice Admiral of England from 1792 to 1796.
Richard Howe entered the navy at age 13 and in 1740 transferred to the HMS Severn, one of the squadron sent into the South Atlantic in 1740. The Severn failed to round the Horn and returned home. Howe next served in the West Indies in the HMS Burford, and was aboard when she was very severely damaged in the unsuccessful attack on La Guayra in 1742.
