Lee, was the second son of General Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Randolph Custis. He was a planter, a Confederate cavalry General in the American Civil War, and later a Congressman from Virginia.
GENERAL ROONEY LEE. William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, born at Arlington, May 31, 1837, was named for his mother's uncle, William Henry Fitzhugh of Ravensworth. His familiar name was Rooney. His son, Dr. George Bolling Lee of New York, writing under date of November 2, 1936, gave the following explanation: My father was known as “Rooney” Lee.

In 1861 he was a Capt. in cavalry, made Major, and served in Western Virginia. He was LCol. and, in April 1862, Colonel of the 9th Virginia Cavalry Regiment on Virginia operations.
