Ides = Full Moon (whole moon visible in the night sky) When the Romans fixed the length of the months, they also fixed the date of the Ides. In March, May, July, and October, which were (most of them) months with 31 days, the Ides was on the 15th. On other months, it was the 13th.
In his play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, a soothsayer warned the mighty general: “Beware the Ides of March.”. Caesar didn’t heed the warning and died that same day. Since the play became popular, people have been using the phrase as a warning every March 15. However, the date itself isn’t cursed or a day of bad luck.

In a 31-day month such as March, the Kalends was day 1, with days 2–6 being counted as simply “before the Nones.”. The Nones fell on day 7, with days 8–14 “before the Ides” and the 15th as the Ides. Afterward the days were counted as “before the Kalends” of the next month. In shorter months these days were shifted accordingly.
